The Fundamental Bet in Craps - The "Pass Line" Bet

If you want to play craps for money, you need to be familiar with the pass line bet. This is the fundamental bet in real money craps. While you can bet many other ways, if there is no money on the pass line, there is no craps game. But don't worry, betting the pass line is easy.

What is the Pass Line

The Pass line is essentially a bet on whether the shooter will win or lose the round. In Craps, the object is to roll the "point". The point is set on your first roll. Whatever number the two dice add up to is the point. You now continue rolling until either the point comes up again, and you win - or you roll a seven and you lose.

How to Bet the Pass Line and Win on the First Roll!

Usually, the point is set on the first roll. However, there are a few important exceptions. There are several numbers which you could roll on the first roll and which do not set the point. When you roll these numbers, you either win or lose, and the round is over. If you roll the rare snake eyes (double ones), loose deuce (a two and a one), or boxcars (two sixes), you automatically lose. But don't be too concerned, these rolls are fairly rare. What is much more common is to roll a seven or an eleven. When you roll a seven or eleven on the first roll, you win automatically. That is why sevens and elevens are referred to as "lucky seven/eleven" on the first roll.

How Much Can You Win Betting the Pass Line?

When you bet on the pass line and win, you win what is called even money. What that means is that you get an amount back that equals your bet, plus your original bet. So, for example, let's say you bet $10 on the pass line. Then you rolled an eight on the come out roll. If you roll another eight before you roll a seven, you will have won a total of $20. That is your $10 bet back, plus an additional $10 as your win. Likewise, if you bet $10 on the pass line and roll a seven on your first roll, you instantly win the same amount, $20. If you are playing online, this amount is automatically placed in your credit account which is visible on the screen. If you win in a casino, the dealer will move a stack of chips totaling $20 in front of you. You can either continuing playing with these chips or exchange them for cash at the cashier's window.
