The Best Bet in Craps: The "Odds" Bet

You can give yourself much better odds in real money craps if you know how to bet the odds bet. This is considered statistically the best bet in the game. While it functions exactly like a pass line bet, the payout is much higher when you win.

The Odds Line Backs Up the Pass Line

Odds bets are placed behind the pass line. This is because they function as part of the pass line bet, not as an independent bet. If the shooter rolls a seven or eleven on the come out roll, the pass line bet wins even money. Your odds bet is not affected. However if a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 is rolled, that number becomes the point. The shooter must roll that number again before rolling a seven for pass line bets to win. A standard pass line bet without an odds bet will pay out even money. That means that the amount you win (not including your original bet - which you get back) is equal to your wager. If you bet $10 on the pass line, you will win an additional $10. However, if you also placed an odds bet, you will win much more.

How Much You Win Depends on the Point

With an odds bet backing up a pass line bet, the amount you win depends on the point. For example, if the point is a 4 or 10, you will win 2 to 1 on your odds bet. If the point is a 5 or 9, the odds become 3 to 2, and if the point is a 6 or 8, then the odds are 6 to 5.

Some Examples

Let's say you bet $10 on the pass line and roll a 4. If you then roll another 4 before you roll a 7, you will win an additional $10. However, if you had placed another $10 on the odds line, then you would have won $30. You would have won $20 from the odds bet and the $10 from the original pass line bet. That's three times as much!

How It Adds Up

Betting the odds line can really add up. Let's say, you had a lucky streak and made the point four times in a row. Let's say the points you made were a 4, an 8, a 9, and a 10. For this example, you bet $10 on the pass line each time. Your total winnings after this streak would be $40, $10 from every time you made the point.

Playing the Odds

Now let's say each time you placed an additional $10 on the odds line. With the same points and rolls, you would have won a total of $107! That's more than 150 percent higher, just by risking another $10. This is why betting the odds is considered a natural from those who play craps a lot. It's a bet that just makes sense.
