Craps Strategy
The idea of using some sort of mathematical equation to defeat the dry odds of gambling has been one that has been pursued by mathematicians throughout the ages. Some of these mathematicians have actually succeeded in their endeavor. People like Edward O. Thorp and the MIT blackjack teams have managed to harness the theories of applied mathematics and make a fortune in the process. Some people believe that applied mathematics can be used to win at craps, too.
The Gambler's Fallacy and Craps Strategy
A strategy sometimes called the 'gambler's fallacy' is that the results of previous roles might have an impact on future rolls. This theory is then employed to determine on which dice results to wager. If the dice results were absolutely random, this theory would indeed be a fallacy. Randomness is not influenced by past or future results. Yet, this strategy does occasionally work precisely because the game is not completely random. The tendencies of the device might be influenced by several factors but that does not make the throw completely random. It only makes the results nearly impossible to calculate. A valid mathematical approach to such difficult math problems is to try to guess at the answer based on previous answers.
The Martingale System and Craps Strategy
Another system, the Martingale system is a gambling strategy that sounds remarkably sound. Although it has a certain mathematical flaw, this does not make it completely invalid. It only demonstrates that the system has its limitations. The idea is that if one progressively increases his bets in order to cover one's losses, one must eventually win and cover those losses. The problem with the system is that there is often a house maximum which cannot be exceeded. This effectively limits the use of the Martingale since beyond a certain amount of losses the bet can not be raised to cover the losses. Of course, if one plays at games where the bet range is quite large, the chance of losing so badly loss after loss, that the maximum is met is quite small. Thus, the Martingale system is not completely invalid. One of the games where the Martingale has often been tried is the game of Craps precisely because of the great range of stakes that can usually be played for. Craps allows for very low wagers as well as stakes for high rollers.
