The Glamour of Shooting Craps
The rolling of the dice in the game of Craps is known as 'Shooting Craps'. This action of abandon where the player trusts his luck to the hands of fate has often been seen as an act of skill and boldness. This aura surrounding the game of Craps is perhaps what has made the game so popular. It is the inherent glamour that accompanies this act of boldness that has attracted players to try their luck at this game. In addition, there are other issues that add to the excitement of the game.
The Roll of the Dice
Two issues that are often described by Craps players are the skill in Craps and a unique feeling of communion. The skill involves rolling the dice to a given result despite the seeming randomness of the dice roll. This skill sometimes gives the impression of something almost unnatural. This has led certain people to suspect cheating and loaded dice. Thus, there are so many rules regarding how the dice are handled to prevent any chance of such an event taking place. The communion is that unique feeling that gamblers sometimes have that they somehow have a measure of control over the physical occurrences around them; the roll of the dice or the spin of a wheel. This feeling is often elicited while shooting Craps and only serves to add to the glamour.
Guys and Dolls
In the famous musical, titled 'Guys and Dolls', this glamour of Craps is reinterpreted. The two main characters (perhaps we should call them 'guys') are both wholly involved in playing Craps. One is trying to host a high rolling Craps game and reap the reward of the house advantage of Craps. The other is a high rolling Craps player. In the musical, not only does the high roller defy odds and win his way, he also brings about the happy ending which leads to the satisfaction of everyone. All this comes about thanks to his successful gambling time and time again. Not only that, the gambler meets his true love and ends up joining the mission as an expression of his complete devotion to good.
